Dr. Ehssan H. Koupaie, Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Queen’s University, has been recognized with the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance (OUSA) 2025 Teaching Excellence Award. This prestigious honor celebrates educators who excel at unlocking the potential of Ontario’s young people, engaging students in the learning experience, and fostering a desire to learn.
Dr. Koupaie’s research focuses on environmental bioengineering, aiming to develop sustainable, cost-effective, and energy-efficient techniques for converting organic waste into bioenergy, biofuels, and value-added chemicals. His work integrates principles of anaerobic digestion, fermentation, thermal hydrolysis, microbiology, and nanotechnology.
Beyond his research, Dr. Koupaie is deeply committed to teaching and mentoring students. He teaches courses such as Biochemical Engineering, Design of Unit Operations and Engineering Communications, Ethics and Professionalism, where he emphasizes the importance of environmental stewardship and innovative problem-solving.
Dr. Koupaie’s dedication to education and his ability to inspire students have made him a deserving recipient of the OUSA Teaching Excellence Award, highlighting his significant contributions to both academia and student development.
