The Department of Chemical Engineering at Queen’s University is deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Cheng-Chien “James” Hsu on March 28, 2025, following a brief illness.

Professor Hsu was a dedicated faculty member in the department from 1964 to 1995. During his tenure, he established a pioneering research program in polymer reaction engineering, advancing knowledge and innovation in this important field. His impact extended beyond research: as Department Head from 1987 to 1992, he helped guide the department through a time of growth and development. Professor Hsu will be fondly remembered by former students and departmental colleagues as friend, an excellent teacher, a dedicated mentor, and a true gentleman.

Born in a rural village near Ningbo, China, Professor Hsu’s life journey bridged traditional rural living and the rapidly evolving modern world. That journey eventually led him to Queen’s, where he became a respected educator and mentor in chemical engineering. In addition to his academic accomplishments, Professor Hsu was a founding executive of the Chinese-Canadian Association of Kingston and District. He also enjoyed golf and fishing with his family.

Professor Hsu is lovingly remembered by his wife, Marjorie; his sisters, Grace Lo (Wenso) and Vivian Shi; his sons, Ted (Tara Sharkey), Bobby, and Leon (Rachel Sha); and his granddaughters, Ella, Sophia, Madeleine, and Vera-Claire Hsu. He was predeceased by his sisters, Josephine and Constance Hsu.

The department extends its heartfelt condolences to Professor Hsu’s family. Those wishing to learn more about his life are invited to read his full obituary here: https://www.kingstonist.com/obituaries/james-cheng-chien-hsu/
