Congratulations to Professor James McLellan, who has been awarded a Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) Fellowship in 2025. James McLellan completed his BSc (Honors) in Mathematics and Engineering
(Process Control option) at Queen's University in 1981, followed by an MASc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Waterloo in 1983, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Queen's University in 1990. He joined the Department of Chemical Engineering at Queen's University in 1990, where he has served in various capacities, including as Department Head from 2006 onward.
Throughout his career, Professor McLellan has demonstrated a strong commitment to teaching, mentorship, and public awareness. He has been instrumental in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among students, helping them develop the skills necessary to thrive in their careers. His dedication to education is further exemplified by his role as Academic Director of the Dunin-Deshpande Queen's Innovation Centre, where he supports students in transforming their technical knowledge into viable business ventures.
In addition to his teaching and mentorship roles, Professor McLellan has made significant scientific, engineering, and technical contributions. His research interests include functional data analysis, statistical methods for chemical process modeling, fault detection, real-time optimization, and process control. These contributions have advanced the field of chemical engineering and have had a substantial impact on both academia and industry.
Professor McLellan's service to the chemical engineering community extends beyond Queen's University. He has been actively involved with the Chemical Institute of Canada and its constituent societies, contributing his expertise to various initiatives and committees. His leadership and dedication have helped shape the direction of chemical engineering in Canada.
